Important CA Legislative Updates
PAGA
Since its introduction in 2004, the Private Attorneys General Act (PAGA) has enabled individuals to file lawsuits not only for their own Labor Code violations but also for those affecting other employees. This has led to a surge in litigation, costing businesses billions annually with minimal benefits to workers.
On July 1, 2024, Governor Gavin Newsom signed two new PAGA reform laws aimed at curbing misuse and reducing potential penalties. These reforms allow employers to demonstrate reasonable efforts toward compliance with wage and hour laws, thus mitigating some of the financial risks associated with PAGA claims.
To support employers in navigating these changes, we are offering the PAGA Wage and Hour Compliance Toolkit. This comprehensive resource includes over 60 digital and physical tools to help businesses adhere to California’s wage and hour regulations effectively. Purchase Toolkit.
Employment Poster Updates for 2025
Starting January 1, 2025, employers in California will need to update two key workplace posters. First, the Workers’ Compensation Notice to Employees must now include information about employees’ rights to consult a licensed attorney and the fact that attorney’s fees are typically paid from the injured employee’s recovery. Second, the whistleblower rights notice will need to adhere to new requirements, including using a font larger than 14 point and displaying the whistleblower hotline number. AB 2299 mandates that a model notice will be provided by the California Labor Commissioner to ensure compliance. Despite the option for electronic distribution, employers must still physically post these notices in the workplace. Keep these changes in mind for your 2025 poster needs, and note that CalChamber’s updated posters will be available for pre-order starting October 1. Read Full Update.

Yountville Chamber Partners with California Paid Family Leave Grant to Get Money into the Hands of Small Business
Yountville Chamber is pleased to announce its partnership with California Paid Family Leave Grant (CPFLG). CPFLG allows eligible small businesses in California with 1-100 employees with at least one (1) employee utilizing California’s Paid Family Leave program to apply for grants up to $2,000 per employee to offset the increased costs associated with the employee out on leave.
California’s Paid Family Leave program allows California workers to take paid leave to bond with a new child (through birth, adoption, or foster care), to care for a seriously ill family member, or to participate in a qualifying event because of a family member’s military deployment.
Businesses impacted by California’s Paid Family Leave program will have increased costs such as training and upskilling existing staff to cover the duties of the employee on California’s Paid Family Leave; hiring and training additional staff to cover the duties of the employee on California’s Paid Family Leave; and marketing, recruitment, and other reasonably foreseeable training costs.
